The percentage of African American families homeschooling has risen. It is estimated that nationwide it is now 15%, according to the National Education Research Institute.
When we started to home school in 2000, we were often the only African American family at conferences, in support groups, and at the library, where we spent a lot of our school days.
There are also more resources, for all families, than there were when we started (see the below).
All in all, homeschooling is now recognized as a viable choice for all families.
